Officially announced all the way back in July, the gaming-friendly Asus ROG Phone 3 5G is finally in stock and available for quick delivery stateside starting at $999.99. In the monolithic triangular box, you'll find the phone itself, a powerful 30-watt charger with a very nice USB-C-to-C cable, and a thin case. 2 July 2020: Asus ROG Phone 3 launch date official Asus has confirmed that the ROG Phone 3 will be revealed on 22 July. There are two debossed "ROG" stamps along the phone's right edge. Around front, there's a big, 6.59-inch display. Mobile gamers, rejoice: the Asus ROG Phone 3 5G beast is shipping in the US … But look closer, and you can't miss the funky camera module, the cooling vents, and the REPUBLIC OF GAMERS branding. There's also the AeroActive Cooler 3, an attachable cooling fan that makes use of the ROG Phone 3's secondary accessory port and adds a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. And when it does need a top-up, 30W fast charging should get you going pretty quickly. If you have to ask, no. But it produces some surprisingly competent shots. Asus … One of my few software complaints is that the optional always-on display is incapable of showing notifications — it's just a clock. Learn more. You can adjust what each trigger does on a per-game basis, and even configure them to perform actions outside games (calling up the Google Assistant, for example). Touch latency is also down to 25ms, and there’s an improved 270Hz touch sampling rate for improved touch response times. Both prior models started at $900 when they launched, so it's safe to assume it'll be at least that much — possibly more, thanks to the notoriously pricey Snapdragon 865+ it's packing. Low-light photography is another weakness. This phone is a spec monster and it handles accordingly. Having two ports lets you connect a charger and a USB accessory simultaneously, for when you need to juice up but don't want to unplug your earbuds or controller. Asus toned down the aggressive gamer aesthetic of previous ROG Phone generations. Asus's gaming features are part useful, part just for fun. Asus more or less left Android alone here — if you choose the "Classic" software experience during setup, anyway. Your Instagram followers won't think you have a Pixel or an iPhone — white balance and exposure are sometimes a bit off and low light performance isn't great — but detail and dynamic range are pretty spot-on in good light from both the standard and ultra-wide shooters. The Asus ROG Phone 3 has an RRP of €999 (around £897) for the 12GB/512GB combo, and €1099 (around £987) for the 12GB/512GB variant, putting it in line with flagship smartphones from the likes of Apple and Samsung. It’s also more expensive than competing gaming-focused smartphones like the Black Shark 3 (£539/$599) and Red Magic 5G (£539/$579). I'm just not sure whether that person exists. The side port is also in a better location for charging the phone while you play games. With such a detailed display and capable SoC to power, battery is an important area when it comes to the ROG Phone 3, and it’s another area where Asus fails to disappoint. It's also running an old version of Android, and there's no indication of when it'll see an update. Pair that much memory with the 865+, and you've got a phone that's absolutely unflappable. It's hard to say for sure whether anybody in the US should buy the ROG Phone 3, though, because Asus still hasn't announced how much it'll cost here. Subscribe to Android Police's weekly newsletter, with the biggest stories, latest deals, and insight on the week's news. The headphone jack it adds is a nice bonus, but the phone's considerable size coupled with the fact that it has no water resistance makes me think it could've been built in. We’re awaiting confirmation from Asus, and we’ll update this section once we know more. Asus ROG Phone 3 release date, price, features and spec news The Asus ROG Phone 3 is among the first to pack the Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, and it's a powerhouse of mobile gaming. If that wasn’t enough, Asus has gone a step further by providing PC-esque control of the SoC, giving users the ability to either overclock the CPU and increase the throttle limit to boost performance and produce a sustained high frame rate, or underclock it to lengthen battery life and keep the phone cool. Pre-orders aren’t live just yet, but we’ll be sure to update this section once they go live. In dim light, pictures are dark and blurry (like the one of my dog Leon in the first gallery above). MacBook Air with M1 release date, pricing, features and design news, Why Clearpay created its own Pantone colour, "Encore une chose" : ce que Apple a annoncé lors de sa 3ème keynote. Right: Night mode. Note: We may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site, at no extra cost to you. The Asus ROG Phone 3 may not look too different on the surface, with the same overall design and gamer-esque Aura RGBs on the rear, but there are plenty of upgrades on offer. At the heart of the ROG Phone 3, you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus alongside the Adreno 650 GPU and either 12- or 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, providing incredible power for mobile gamers and super-fast 5G connectivity. You’ll get the regular Snapdragon 865 and not the 865 Plus, alongside a reduced 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. More notable than its resolution, the display's refresh rate can be pushed all the way up to a blistering 144Hz. For someone who lives and breathes mobile gaming and to whom price is no object, someone who doesn't care about getting increasingly common quality-of-life features and is unbothered by the prospect of their device missing security patches (to say nothing of OS updates), the ROG Phone 3 might still be a good purchase. But for all the (frankly surprising) finesse in the ROG Phone 3's software, I've got one critical hangup: it's out of date. The phone was already a dubious proposition at an assumed $900, but for four figures, it's hard to recommend anybody, gaming enthusiast or not, buy it. On paper, at $900, it's not a good buy for most people. But for a gaming enthusiast with the right expectations, it could be a great fit. I wouldn't bother springing for the upgrade, though — the base model has 12 gigs, and even that is more than any mobile game can make use of. The Asus ROG Phone 3 is official, and it's a monster. Asus has learned to better straddle the line between playful and loud, and I appreciate that. But nagging flaws more expected from budget phones make it hard to recommend to any but the most ardent mobile gamer. The only real letdown in the ROG Phone 3's panel is that it's a little uneven; when it's dim, grays appear grainy. Left: A regular photo in dim lighting. You’ve even got access to a 480fps slow-mo video mode, and the ability to capture 4K time-lapses too. Our resident Apple expert, Lewis covers everything from iPhone to AirPods, plus a range of smartphones, tablets, laptops and gaming hardware. While not the main focus for gamers, there’s also an upgraded camera setup available. It's entirely possible that the fan would have a more pronounced impact on prolonged performance — Asus says it can lower the phone's surface temperature by up to four degrees Celsius — but the ROG Phone 3 performs perfectly well without it already. Left: Cooling fan attached. You can let the phone choose its refresh rate dynamically depending on what's on screen or manually peg it to 60, 90, 120, or 144Hz. At 6000mAh, it’s among the largest batteries on any smartphone right now - Asus claims it wanted it even bigger, but couldn’t do so without tweaking the dimensions of the phone.
